Native Niko took the lead entering the stretch and held on for a neck victory in the first race on Friday at Mountaineer Race Track to become the first winner for Central Kentucky-based freshman sire Shaniko.

Trained by James Jackson for owner-breeder Elkhorn Oaks, Native Niko covered 4½ furlongs in :54.82 on a track rated as fast. From the family of champion and 1980 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Genuine Risk, he is one of two winners from as many starters out of the winning Sir Cat mare Native Aly.

A nine-year-old by A.P. Indy out of multiple graded stakes winner Sapphire n’ Silk, by Pleasant Tap, Shaniko stood the 2010 season for $5,000 at Millennium Farms in Lexington. He has 66 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Shaniko posted five wins, four seconds, and two thirds in 16 career starts and earned $388,380 in three seasons. He won the 2005 Kentucky Cup Classic Stakes (G2) in 1:49.74, which established a Turfway Park track record for 11⁄8 miles.
