Take the Points scores in the GI Secretariat S. 08-08-2009 Starlight Partners's TAKE THE POINTS (Even the Score out of Ginger Ginger by Fred Astaire) gamely fought his way past Black Bear Island (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) to earn his first graded stakes victory in the GI Secretariat S. at Arlington Park. The 5-2 favorite, last seen placing a close third in the GII Virginia Derby July 18, covered the 1 1/4 miles over the yielding turf course in 2:05.41. The first of three Grade 1 races on Arlington’s International Festival of Racing card, the Secretariat got the sequence started with a bang as Take the Points and Black Bear Island battled stride for stride through the final quarter mile. Black Bear Island appeared poised to hold off Take the Points, but the Even the Score colt would not be denied in the final strides under Kent Desormeaux, prevailing by a head on yielding turf.
